Nomangwane Isabella (born Silwana) Snail was born in Cala, South Africa on the 2 August 1955. She matriculated at Mathanzima High School, South Africa. She then went to Baragwanath Hospital in 1975 and completed her training as a staff nurse in 1977. In 1978 she began training as a professional nurse. In 1979 whilst busy with her training she entered into marriage. She accompanied her husband to Germany as he was involved on an exchange programme.
The training was interrupted as a result and therefore she had to attend a German language school at Goethe Institute in Freiburg im Breisgau in the Black Forest. Upon completion she continued with the language course in Marburg and der Lahn.. In 1980 her South African nursing certificate was recognised but she was unable to get a work permit. In 1982 she started a completely new course which dealt with the care for the handicapped at Neudetelsau. On completion she then acquired a work permit to work in a home for handicapped people in Himmelkroner Heim in Himmelkron in Bavaria.
In1989 she then got a scholarship from Diakonisches Werk to further training as a registered nurse. She completed her training as a registered nurse in 1992 and worked at the Stäticheskrankenhaus Bayreuth for 6 months. She returned to South Africa in 1992, July, where she was employed at East London Private Hospital. In 1994 she relocated to Pretoria and received employment from Jakaranda Private Hospital. In 2001 she furthered her studies at Vista University (presently known as UNISA).
She then completed her Honours in Social Behaviour Studies in HIV/AIDS. As she was still employed at Jakaranda she began promoting HIV and AIDS awareness in the workplace. In 2005 she resigned from Netcare and has been employed by the National Renal Care (NRC) sector in Jakaranda Private Hospital. This sector deals with Peritoneal Dialysis. She is also currently Director and Sole-Consultant of Snail Medical Consultants. |
